Volunteer Iowa is pleased to announce the availability of federal funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) for youth mentoring services in rural communities in Iowa affected by the opioid epidemic. The 2018 application is for a three-year grant 

Purpose of Sub-grants

Volunteer Iowa will provide grant funding to as many as six IMP certified mentoring programs in rural areas affected by the opioid crisis.  The IMP Mentoring Project targets the critical need in rural Iowa to build protective factors for youth with risk factors for substance abuse, which includes youth affected by opioids.  

The sub-grants will have two overall mentoring program goals: 

  1. Provide mentoring services that are tailored to the needs of the identified at-risk and high-risk youth target population and 

  1. Develop and implement program design enhancements that further align with research and evidence on effective mentoring approaches. 


The following entities are encouraged to apply: non-profit organizations, local governments, schools, and community and faith-based organizations.  Applicants must be currently providing mentoring services to youth affected by opioids and in a service area that is rural.   Additionally, applicants must have a system for fiscal oversight and for tracking outcomes for youth and family in their programs.


Applicants may request $50,377, and up to six grants will be awarded. The source of fund is federal award from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, CFDA Number 16.726

Iowa Grants Management System ( This web-based system is used by the State of Iowa for the submission and tracking of grant applications. All applicants who wish to receive a mentoring grant must utilize the Iowagrants system to submit their request.The IowaGrants system will be open for applications on or before November 26, 2018.  Individuals who do not have an account must register to obtain one.
